Application of Neural Network Towards the Classification of High-dimensional Data Sets
with Dr. Erzsébet Merényi

As a research assistant for Dr. Erzsébet Merényi in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, I observed research concerning the application of neural network towards the classification of high-dimensional data sets. I tested out certain modules of the proprietary software that she has developed, RAPID. I also experimented with changes to the classification algorithm.

The internship was a useful exercise in that it taught me transferable skills. Some of my work entailed literature searches, a tedious but necessary task. I thoroughly documented and tested out RAPID algorithms using a prescribed methodology. I also participated in a collaborative software development environment with Dr. Merényi and Scott Williams, an analyst from out-of-state.

I am thankful for the opportunity to have conducted research under Dr. Merényi. I am considering graduate studies of some sort, and this was a useful way of discovering what I would enjoy and what I would dislike in a graduate school setting. I am going to continue my research for Dr. Merényi through the course ELEC490, which is a direct result of my internship under Dr. Merényi through the Brown Undergraduate Internship award.
